What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is being aware of your actions and feelings – and how they affect those around you. It also involves being aware of how others are feeling and responding appropriately. People with high EI have better relationships, and are more able to adjust to change and be flexible.

There are 5 key elements:

  • Self Awareness
  • This is the ability to monitor and control our own behavior, emotions, or thoughts, and altering them depending on the situation

  • Self-Regulation
  • People with a high degree of EI are usually motivated. They're willing to defer immediate results for long-term success

  • Motivation
  • Every time you face a challenge, or even a failure, try to find at least one good thing about the situation. Remeber your why

  • Empathy
  • Being aware of the feelings and emotions of other people. You can place yourself in their shoes and feel what they are feeling.

  • Social Skills
  • Being aware of how you’re feeling, what others are feeling, and able to communicate effectively, you’re ready to interact well with others.

    How is EQ different to IQ?

    Knowledge vs Emotional Intelligence. IQ tests measure your ability to solve problems and use logic to communicate ideas. EQ tests measure your ability to recognize emotion in yourself and others.

    Why is EQ important?

    Emotional intelligence is important because it allows us to notice our feelings and others in a situation.
    It allows you to “manage your emotions/ regulate your feelings”.
    Staying calm in stressful situations, thoughtful decision makers who are intuitive, self aware and they can take criticism on board. These contribute to soft skills that help in all aspects of life, personal and professional.
